GETTING STARTED..

with your JOURNAL

what does the journal mean ?? ...
the journal is a place for you to record your own observation about the topic that you will write about it .. also , writing in your journal is a way of thinking on a paper.

the purpose of the journal is when you get writing your paragraph you can look back in your journal for ideas and evrything that you have wrote
in short , it's organize your ideas before writing

بـ خصوص الـ journal هو بمثـآبة عمليه تنظيم لـ أفكـارك عن الموضوع الي رآح تبدأ كتـآبته .. بحيث أن , من خلآل الـ journal رآح تدون جمـيع الافكـار والمـلآحظات الي سجلتها عن موضوعك مما يسهل عليـك الكتـآبه

this lesson is designed to help you know the stages of writing ..and, it focuses on the process of writing the way writers actually go about the task of writing .

we will go through a general sequence of stages called PREWRITING , and DRAFTINGREVISING ..we will work through these smae stages as you complete your paragraph , but in this lesson we will know what each stage of them mean and in the next lesson we will talk about them more and more

PREWRITING

PREWRITING ; a stage , you take time to think about your topic and generate ideas .

المقصود من ذلك : هذه المرحله هي مرحله مشابه لـ journal .. كل الي عليك انك تأخذ ورقه وقلم تجهز موضوع في بـآلك بعدين تبدأ بكتـآبه نقـآط او افكـار جت في بالك عن موضوعك

DRAFTING

DRAFTING ; is the actual writing of your paragragh .

while your first draft focus on getting your meaning down on paper . don't be overly concerned with grammatical correctness at this stahe ,

المقصود من ذلك : هذه المرحله الـ drafting مـأخوذ من كلمة draft مانسميه بـ العربيه المسوده .. يعني اذا انت انتهيت من المرحله الاولى الي هي prewriting ونظمت افكـآرك عن موضوعك تجي لـ drafting .. وتبدأ بكتـآبه هذه الافكار على هيئه paragraph بدون ماتركز علـى أخطاءك الاملائيه او على القواعد او حتى مدى تناغم وتجانس افكار الـ paragraph ... يعني فقط أكـتب

REVISING
THE MOST IMPORTANT STAGE

we know the drafting stage is just a place to start , after it's completed , the real work of writingcan begin , you will spend most of your time revisig .

revising broken down into three parts
REVISING ; which is changing the content and organization of the paragraph . so , the REVISING is rethinking or reseeing your paper

EDITING ; deal with the sentences or the word in the paragraph . you decide that if there is some words or sentences you must change them and find other ones fit your paragraph more

;PROOFREAD read your paper to find any errors in grammar , spelling , and punctuation

المقصود من ذلك : هذه المرحله من مراحل الكتآبه قد تعد من اهم مراحل الكتآبه ان لم تكن هي اهمها .. لاانه من خلال الـ prewrting و الـ drafting راح تكوون كتاابتك بدون اي تدقيق على الاخطـاء الاملاائيه والقواعد وبنااء الجمل وتجانسها ومدى انسجام الـ paragraph
فـ من خلآل هذه المرحله راح تبدا بالعمل على كل هذه الامور الصغيره لكنها تصنع الفرق في كتابتك وتنقلها الى مرحله افضل

The goal of this lesson

To practice techniques for generating ideas

GENERATING IDEA

Sometimes you are frustrated because you can not thinking of any thing to say in your topic that you want to talk about in in your paragraph ,

In this lesson , I will learn you a number of techniques for generating idea , use these techniques when you feel that your mind is empty of ideas or your flowing of ideas drying up .

These techniques are

BRAINSTORMING

FREEWRITNIG

WH QUESTIONS

CLUSTRING

Let's talk about each single technique , and I will provide you by an example of each one of these techniques



BRAINSTORMING

BRAINSTORMING ; is a sudden insight or connection , and way to associate ideas and stimulate thinking .

How to do a brainstorming ( practice with yourself)

set ( put) a period of time .

start with a word or phrase and let your thoughts go in the direction they will.

write anything comes to your mind that related with your topic that you will write about it , write either words or phrases , without looking back or organizing.

write down your ideas as quickly as possible

REMEMBER , YOU ARE DOING ALL OF THAT OVER A LIMITED PERIOD OF TIME

العصف الذهني : بـ النسبه لـ هذا الاسلووب هو يعد من اهم الاساليب واسهلها وامتعها في ذات الوقت لـ ايجاد وتوليد الافكـار , فـ من خلاال العصف الذهني لاا تحتاج لـ ايجاد الافكار الا ان تضع موضووع في ذهنك , لـ نفرض الكمبيوتر .. وتقووم بكتاابه أي كلمه او جمله ترتبط بـ الكمبيتر مثلاا keyboard .. الـ خ

FREEWRITING

FREEWRITING ; is writing without stopping , that's mean write whatever comes to your mind without worrying about whether the ideas are good or the grammar is correct.

What should you do when you are freewrite ??

when you freewrite do not interrupt the flow of you ideas , write them as they come to you .

do not censor (edit) any thoughts or insights.

do not go back and reread.

do not cross anything out

when you freewrite set a goal and a time limit
.

The purpose of freewriting is to free up your mind , and to let it make associations or conecctions.

الكتابه الحره : هي انك تمسك قلمك وتكتب بدوون أي قيوود ولاا أي شرووط ولاا أي تدقييق سواء من نااحيه الـ grammar و او حتى من نااحية المعنى ..

زي مااوضحت اعلااه الهدف وكيفية الكتابه الحره..

طبعا هذا التكنيك عمله كـ ساابقه , يولد الافكار عندك , يزيد الانتاجيه الذهنيه ..

WH QUESTIONS ; who , what , where , why and sometimes how .. you can you them to generate material for your writing.

Asking these questions allows you to see your topic from different point of view .

HOW TO USE THIS TECHNIQUE ?

To use this technique , write out as many wh questions as you can then , answer them as fully as you can.

1/ WHO SI MY UNCLE , REALLY ? WHAT KIND OF PERSON IS HE ? WHAT DO PEOPLE THINK OF HIM?

2/ what happened exactly ? how and when did it happen ? why ? who was present ?what did my uncle say when he found out ?

3/ where does my uncle work ? where is this place ? what do I know about the location ? what department does he work in ? what does he do there ?

الاسئله : طبعا هي طريقه كـ ساابقها من الطرق الي رااح تولد وتنتج الافكار .. قد يراها البعض طريقه صعبه لاانك مظطر فيها الى ان تسأل وتجاوب على السؤال في ذات الوقت .. هي قد تعتبر صعبه ولكن نتايجها اكثر من رائعه .. لاان بمجرد اجابتك على سوال السؤال الواحد راح يطلع منه كذا فكره وراح تنظر الى موضوعك من جوانب متعدده .. وبرضوا قد يتعين لك موقعك انت من البراقراف ..

كـ تطبيق على هذا الـ part .. اختر لك أي موضووع من الموااضيع الي طرحتها في تطبيقات الاساليب اعلاااه الساابقه .. وطبق علييه هذا التكنييك .




CLUSTRING

CLUSTRING ; is making a visual map of your ideas , it frees you from following a strictly linear sequence ,

HOW TO USE THIS TECHNIQUE ?

To use this technique , begin with your topic circled in the middle of a sheet of a paper . then , draw a line out from the circle and write an idea associated with the topic . circle this idea and from it draw lines and write an ideas associated with it and continue until u complete your map and you feel that you can not thinking of something elese.

When you finished your map , study it , and start writing your paragraph according to the ideas that you have wrote them in your map .. be careful when you choose your ideas .

to know what does paragraph mean

· To know how to write a topic and topic sentence correctly

يعد هذآ الدرس هو البدآية الحقيقة لكتـآبة الـ paragraph .. قصدآ , جزأت هذآ الدرس الى جزئين بحكم أهميته في بدآية الكتآبه , وأيضـآ عشان مـآاكثر عليكم معلومات مهمه في نفس الوقت مما قد يعيق عملية أستيعابها بـ الشكل المطلوب .
الدرس جدآآ قصير ومعلووماته سهله .. طبعـآ هو الجـزء الاول , الجزء الثآني راح يكون الآسبووع القادم يوم السبت ان شااء الله تعـآلى

WHAT is a paragraph

You probably know that , a paragraph is a group of sentence .. that's right

But to be more specific the paragraph is more than that ,

PARAGRAPH: a group of sentences that develop one main idea , in other word , a paragraph develops a TOPIC

.

THE TOPIC OF THE PARAGRAPH

Before writing any paragraph , it's important to think , first about the topic

.

THE TOPIC IS : the subject of the paragraph , it is what the paragraph is about ..

الموضوع : هو شيء معين راح تكتب عنه الـ paragraphحقك .. يعني من خلآل هذه النقطه بأمكانك وبـ بساطه تحدد وجهتك فـ الكتآبه .. الى اين انت ؟.. وعن ايش رآح تكتب ..
يعني تختار موضوع معين كـ ان تختار مثلاا الكتآبه عن الـ computerولاآ الـ smoking
Or whatever you want
ايضـآ نقطه مهمه : في حال انك جالس تقرا أي parahraphل لازم تكون عـآرف يتكلم هذا الـ paragraphعن أيش ؟؟
عشآن كذآ كـ تطبيق على هذه الخطوهـ .. رآح اعطيكم الحين براقراف كـآمل .. والمطلوب منك تعرف لي الـ topicحق البرقراف أيش ؟؟

A final examination in a course will give the student the initiative to do his or her best work throughout the course. Students who are only taking notes and attending classes in order to pass a few short tests will not put forth their best effort . For instance , some of my friend in drama , in which there is no final examination , take poor notes , which they throw away after each short test . Skipping classes also becomes popular . Imagine the incredible change a final examination would produce . Students would have to take notes and attend all classes in order to be prepared for the final examination .

THE TOPIC SENTENCE…

The topic sentence isthe most important sentence of the paragraph , it states the main idea and introduces the readers to the topic .

A good topice sentence also serves to state an idea or an attitude about the topic , this idea or an attitude of the topic is calledCONTROLING IDEA

The controlling idea iscontrols what the sentences of the paragraph will discuss
..

All sentences in the paragraph should relate to and develop the controlling idea ..

الجمله الاساسيه في الـ paragraph هي الجمله الي تقدم البرقراف كـ كل .. ومن خلآل هذه الجمله راح تعرف البرقراف عن ماذا سووف يتحدث .. بـ النسبه لـ topic sentence لآزم تحتوي على مآ أسميناه الـ controlling idea الـ controlling idea هذي قد تكون كلمه او اكثر على حسب ..
والـ controlling idea يمكن ان نقول عنها هي فكره الكاتب ووجهة نظره عن الموضوع ..

لــكن هنـآك شرووط يجب أن تتوفر في الـ controlling idea وهي كـ التـآلي

· The controlling idea should shows the writer's attitude or the point of view .

· Mustn't be invited ( that's mean you say am going to talk about , I will talk about

· Should be one idea

· Not fact or lie

الشروط السابقه لآبد ان تتوفر في الـ controlling ideaلانه صحة الكنترول آيديآ رآح تثمر برقراف صحيح وأفكار متسلسه

The topic sentence should contain (1) topic .. (2) controlling idea

يعني الـ topic sentence لآبد انها تتضمن على الموضوع الي راح ييكلم عنه الكـآتب في البرقراف ولاابد انها تحتوي على فكره الكاتب ووجهة نظره تجـآه موضوع ..
عشان تفهموون أكثر المقصوود من هذا الكلاام وكيفيه معرفه الـ topic sentenceو الـ controlling idea في البرقراف راح احل لكم مثالين .. واترك امثله لكم كـ تطبيق

مثلاا عندي الجمله التاليه .. هي فـ الاساسtopic sentence المطلووب مني معرفة الـ topicو الـcontrolling idea

Recognizing the topic sentence

Where should the topic sentence be placed in the paragraph
?


Generally, because the topic sentence does introduce , it is a good idea to place it at or near the beginning of the paragraph .


Even , the topic sentence may be placed near the middle or even at the end of the paragraph .however , depending on the kind of the paragraph

Improving the topic sentence

As indicated , the topic sentence consist of the topic and the controlling idea .


But , it's not enough merely to have a topic and the controlling idea .

The controlling idea should be clear , specific , and focused on a particular aspect

.

الفكرة الي أبغـى اوصلها لكم من خلآل كلآمي السابق الي هي : الـ controlling idea
لابد ان تكون مستوفيه لـ شرووط تصب في مصلحة البراقراف ومصلحتك انت كـ كاتب للبرقراف عشات تكوون ملمووم الافكار ..
يعني الـ controlling idea لازم تكون واضحه , محدده , تحوي فكره واحده .. لانه من خلآل كتابتك راح تعتمد على الـ controlling idea والافكار الي راح تفتحها عليك .. فكلما كانت محدووده وموجه لـ اتجاه واحد كانت افضل ..لانه فيغير ذلك الوضع راح تفتح لك ابوااب وابوواب م الافكار ماراح يستوعبها البرقراف بـ التالي راح يكون ذهنك وبرقرافك مشووش وغير منسجم ..
اعطيـكم مثال .

Drinking coffee is bad

This sentence has a TOPIC which is DRINKING COFFEE , and it has CONTROLING IDEA which is BAD .

BUT , they are vague (unclear) so , in what way is coffee bad ? for whom or what is it bad ?? is drinking a little coffee bad , or drinking a lot of coffee is bad ??

So , as you can , this topic sentence leaves a lot of questions that probably can not be answered effectively in one paragraph …

So this sentence need more focus , and this focus can come from the controlling idea

Let's change it into
:

Drinking over four cups of coffee can be harmful to pregnant women

Now , the topic itself is narrowed down some more and the controlling idea is more precise

هذا المقصوود كما شرحت لكم في المثال السابق .. الي هو مامدى تاثير الـ comtroling idea كلما كانت محدوده النطاق .. وشرحت لكم في المثال قبل وبعد

المطلوب منكم الحيين بعطييكم ثلااث من الـ Topic sentence المطلوب منكم .. تعيطوون صيااغتها بحث انها تكوون محدوده اكثر , سواء من ناحيه الـ topic او الـ controlling idea في الجمل التاليه .. غيرو فيها بالشكل المناسب الي راح تحسوون بيكون محدوده اكثر واضحه اكثر ممكن شملها في برقراف

الشي الاخييير الي اود ان انوه بخصووصه وهو : في نهايه كل برقراف لابد ان يكون هنااك جمله ختاميه تنهي برقرافك وتكوون مرتبطه بـ البرقراف وخصووصا الـ topic sentence .. هذه الجمله تسمى concluding sentence أي الجمله المنهيه لـ البرقراف او الختاميه

to support your paragraph by fitting sentences

support your point .. ''paragraph''

after you have stated your point in the topic sentence , you need to support it with reasons , facts ,and examples . as a writer , it is your job to provide enough support to prove the point you made in your topic sentence .

your supporting sentences should be as specific as possible ..
supporting sentences that are vague or that mearly repeat the point that you made in your topic sentence are not effective .

most common characteristics of the supporting sentences

.

the supporting sentences should have what we call it '' unity"" which is mean that , each supporting sentence within the paragraph should relate to the topic and develop the controliing idea

also the is something else that we call it " coherence' which is that , the sentences logically arranged and flow smoothly

يعني مثلاا كتبت جمله مـآ , وانت تشووف في جملتك هذي جمله اساسيه , جمله طورت موضوع الـ paragraph و دعمته بشكل واضح , جمله بـ مجرد كتابتك لها فتحت لك الباب لـ كتابه امثله ولاا ذكر حقائق او التوسع في البرقراف ..

طبعا في الغالب بمـآ ان الـ paragraph شي بسيط .. الاغلب يكون فيه ثلاثـه الى خمسه جمل داعمه


راح اعطييكم مثـآال . طبعـآ (topic sentence ) وبكـتب على أسـآسها ثلآث جمل داعمه الي هي الـ Supporting sentence وعلى اساس هذه الجمل راح ارتب واكتب البرقراف حقي بشكل صحيح

في الجمله التـآليه الي هي الـ topic sentence رآح ألون الـ topic بـ الاحمر , والـ controling idea بـ الازرق

i am terrible at doing the laundry

الجمله الداعمه او الـ supporting sentences
1/ i forget to separate the colored clothes from the white ones

2/ i rarely read the cleaning instructions and have ruined clothes by putting them in the washing machine instead of dry cleaning them

3/ i ofthen shirnk my favorite shirts because i leave them in the dryer for too long

there are several ways to organize sentences in paragraph

the arrangement of sentences and details depends on the writer's purpose

the narrative paragraph

NARRATIVE PARAGRAPH is often used to describe what a person does over a period of time .. OR the narrative paragraph often telling a story

chronological development

in the narrative paragraph you will arrange your ideas according to the time which we call it the chronological way , thats
mean follow the sequence of time

there is three kinds of narrative paragraph ... they are

1/ past narrative paragraph ( the most common one )

2/ present narrative paragraph

3/typical narrative paragraph

THE GOAL OF THIS LESSON

to write a good discriptive paragraph

DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH

a descriptive paragraphs are often used to describe what a person looks and acts like .. or in other word the descriptive paragraph describes a person , place or object

so , if you were asked to describe how something looks a place , a thing or a person sure , the time order would not be LOGICAL . when you are describing the way something looks __it's physical apperance , it's not time but space that is important

therefore , you should arrange your sentences according to where the objects being described are located , this type of organaization called SPATIAL ORGANAIZATION

in a descriptive paragraph , you must make the location of the objects being described very clear

how many descriptive paragraph we have

there is so many kind of descriptive paragraph ,
we can use a descriptive paragraph to describe

person



either describe his/her physical apperance or characteristics



place

you can talk about a place that you visit , describe it
what do you like in it and so on


an object
